String_Surface_Solid
As threads—originally mere “lines”—are gathered together, they transform into “surfaces,” and through layering, eventually into “solids.” We focused on this inherent metamorphosis within fibers. String_Surface_Solid is a project that casts new light on textile offcuts generated during the weaving process. By combining these discarded fibers with naturally derived binders, we reconstruct three expressions intrinsic to fiber materials: line, surface, and solid. Breathing new life into materials collected from production sites, we created six prototypes that explore this transformation.
HONOKA.lab
A design lab pursuing sustainable systems of materials, technologies, and culture.
By reinterpreting the inherent qualities of materials from a unique perspective and developing methods that reveal their appeal, long-standing traditions are highlighted and carried forward to future generations.
The representative project, TATAMI ReFAB PROJECT, received the SaloneSatellite Award 2023 First Prize and the iF Design Award 2024 Gold, and has been exhibited in six countries, including Italy.
