Memory Devices
Since last year, Yasuaki Matsuura—who has long worked on the design of mass-produced cameras—has expanded his practice into contemporary art under the theme of “New Memory.” Using the camera, a traditional Japanese industrial product, as a motif, his work reflects on the meaning of recording and the value of memory in a society increasingly automated and virtualized.
In this exhibition, he presents a series of works that “gaze into distance.” Just as an image becomes blurred when we attempt to focus on something far away, memory too gradually loses its contours over time. Through this parallel, the works explore how distance, both spatial and temporal, shapes what we can and cannot remember.
