ARMOR

"Creating Armor to Protect the Body with a Thin Membrane that Cannot Protect"

Despite setting high expectations for myself and motivating myself proactively, I find myself exhausted and disheartened.

I present myself as a person worthy of encouragement, yet I wonder why I am beautifying myself in this way.

Suddenly, I realized my own triviality. Instead of feeling disappointed, I found it amusing and very enlightening to recognize that I am indeed a trivial person.

Rather than something arising naturally from within, I found myself questioning if I was merely creating shapes to convince others with reasons.

But now, what I truly want to create is an armor that, although weak and unable to protect from anything, is strong precisely because of its fragility and beauty.

Sakura Momma

Sakura was born in Tokyo in 1995 and is currently residing there. After graduating in 2017 from the Department of Crafts and Industrial Design at Musashino Art University with a major in Textile Design, she studied embroidery at École Lesage in Paris. In 2022, she completed a master's degree at the Department of Inter Media Art, Graduate School of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts. Focusing not only on the decorative aspects of embroidery but also on 'embroidery for shaping' that physically strengthens fabric and 'embroidery as an act of sewing' that leaves traces of the hand, she creates transparent, three-dimensional works. Notable solo exhibitions include 'What to Believe, and What to Pray' (ARTiX3, Tokyo), and major awards include the Comité Colbert Grand Prize and the Metro Cultural Foundation Award.
