DESIGNTIDE TOKYO

Time-Crafted

This object features Echizen washi paper applied to its surface.

I first met Izumi Nagata of Nagata Paper Company four years ago. During my student years, I spent six months living in Fukui Prefecture, exploring workshops and collecting traditional techniques and materials that intrigued me.

Among the many prototypes at Nagata Paper Company, I was captivated by a sheet of washi with a mysterious pattern. This paper evoked images of vast natural formations such as layers of sediment, mountain ranges, or crashing waves formed over a long period.

While washi is typically used in shoji screens or lighting due to its thinness, I envisioned applying this washi to a thick, heavy object, akin to marble, to further enhance the natural beauty created by centuries of natural processes.

Echizen washi is said to have a history of around 1,500 years. This object, reminiscent of nature’s long evolution, serves as a reminder of such a lengthy history.

Rikuo Takata

Rikuo was born in Mie Prefecture in 1998. He graduated from the Interior and Architectural Design Department at Kanazawa College of Art. While working as a designer in Tokyo, he is also active in two other locations: Fukui Prefecture, where he lived for six months during university, and his hometown in Mie Prefecture. He creates objects inspired by the craftsmanship of local artisans while immersing himself in producing regions. He aims to create new interpretations within these regions by incorporating respect for local history and tradition while not being bound to them in the way he expresses himself. He is a member of the design studio 'Sen,' based in Fukui Prefecture.
